Adiponitrile

Adiponitrile

Adiponitrile is a precursor to hexamethylenediamine, which is itself a precursor to nylon 6,6 production (fibers and engineering plastics). Adiponitrile can be produced using either an aromatics route via adipic acid, or an olefins route via either butadiene or acrylonitrile. Adiponitrile is produced from acrylonitrile by electrohydrodimerization. The acrylonitrile route to adiponitrile (as raw material for nylon 6,6 fibers and nylon 6,6 plastics) is used by only two companies in the world.
