Market Overview

Duration: Long-term outlook to 2050

Nylon 6 and nylon 6,6 resins are the two most common polyamides found commercially, and both originate from naphtha-based monomers through completely different processes and intermediates. Nylon fiber is one of the major applications for nylon resin, which is used to produce textile and industrial filaments or other filaments, such as bulk continuous filament (BCF) used in carpet manufacture. Currently, nylon fibers account for about 5% of the global demand for all fibers and are placed well behind other fibers such as polyester, cotton, polypropylene, and cellulosic. Nylon fibers are produced by polymerization in liquid or solid phase, and the molten polymer is then extruded through very fine spinnerets to form filaments.

Textile filaments are generally consumed in apparel applications such as blouses, dresses, foundation garments, hosiery, lingerie, undergarments, raincoats, ski apparel, windbreakers, swimwear, and cycle wear. Industrial filaments are consumed as tire cord, automotive airbags, hoses, conveyer and seat belts, parachutes, racket strings, ropes and nets, sleeping bags, tarpaulins, tents, thread, and monofilament fishing line. BCF is used to manufacture rug and carpets. Other filaments are used to produce home furnishings such as bedspreads, curtains, and upholstery. As such, nylon fibers find end uses in a wide variety of industries.
