Butadiene (BD)

Butadiene (BD)

Butadiene (BD) is a four carbon molecule with two double bonds that is primarily used as a precursor to many synthetic rubbers such as polybutadiene, S.B. latex, SBR, nitrile rubber, nitrile latex, and polychloroprene rubber. BD is also combined with other materials to produce plastic resins, such as acrylonitrile and styrene to form acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). BD can be used to produce adiponitrile, a raw material to produce nylon 66. BD production is mainly through extraction from crude C4’s, which are a byproduct from ethylene steam crackers.
