Market Overview
Duration: Short-term – 2-year price forecast and market outlook
Global nylon (also known as polyamide) demand has grown slower than previously anticipated as consumer spending, construction activity and automotive demand are hit by high inflation, tight monetary policy, fears about recession and ongoing structural issues in Mainland China which includes mounting debt burden, stubbornly high youth unemployment and shaky real-estate market.
In addition, the balance of the nylon industry continues to be challenged by capacity expansions in Mainland China. Producers are under tremendous oversupply pressure and some nylon producers have been restructuring their businesses recently. As demand will not likely be strong enough to absorb all the surplus capacity, more business rationalization is expected on the horizon.
The move to EVs will provide additional markets for electric connectors and battery boxes, although it is at the expense of “under hood” applications. Light weight is more important for EV given the needs to improve ranges. This will provide some opportunities for nylon industry. Nylon producers are developing products for those markets, although technologies are still in formation, and the demand outlook remains highly speculative. Nylon producers remain quite bullish for the longer term, betting that demand gains in EV will outweigh the losses in IC vehicles.
