Market Overview
Long-term outlook to 2060
Sodium carbonate, commonly known as soda ash, is a critical inorganic chemical used across a wide range of industries, including glass manufacturing, cleaning agents, water treatment, steel production, textiles, pulp and paper, food additives, renewable energy applications, and batteries. While lithium carbonate remains a relatively small end-use today, it is one of the fastest-growing demand segments, driven by the rapid expansion of electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage technologies.
The solar industry is also transforming soda ash consumption. Solar glass, a type of flat glass used in photovoltaic (PV) panels, has become the single fastest-growing application. Flat glass, used in residential and commercial construction, automotive glazing, and more, is the largest glass segment globally, followed by container glass, which supplies food and beverage packaging. Additional glass applications include tableware, lighting, display screens, mirrors, fiber optics, and insulation fiberglass.
Production Technologies and Global Supply Landscape
Most global soda ash is produced synthetically through the Solvay-Ammonia or Hou processes. However, natural soda ash output is expanding, supported by new projects in mainland China, Turkey, and the United States.
Synthetic soda ash production is generally more costly than natural soda ash derived from trona ore or other mineral deposits. As a result, synthetic plants are typically built close to readily available raw materials such as salt, limestone, and historically coal, enabling more distributed production near regional end-use industries.
Natural soda ash is sourced from underground deposits or dry lakebeds. The United States remains the world’s largest producer, anchored by extensive trona deposits in Wyoming and production from Searles Lake in California. Turkey was previously the second-largest producer but has recently been surpassed by mainland China, which commissioned a major new natural soda ash facility in Inner Mongolia in mid-2023. Natural soda ash is also extracted in the African Rift Valley, particularly in Kenya, Botswana, and Ethiopia, with small-scale artisanal production occurring in other countries such as Chad.
Global Market Influence
The United States, mainland China, and Turkey are the most influential players in the global soda ash market due to their substantial production capacities and their significant roles in seaborne trade. Their production strategies, cost structures, and export policies directly impact global pricing, supply availability, and regional competitiveness.
