Market Overview

Duration: Long-term outlook to 2050

Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) is an important chemical intermediate in multiple chemical derivatives, linking several key branches of chemical manufacturing. There are various chemical routes to manufacturing MMA via different chemical process technologies. These technologies use a range of feedstocks, including the traditional acetone-based process, isobutylene based in Asia and the newer ethylene-based processes along with methanol.

MMA is used in a wide range of downstream polymer applications, such as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) cast sheets, methacrylate molding compounds, artificial marble, and PVC modifiers. MMA is also widely used in the synthesis of acrylic resins used in adhesives, paints and coatings, reactive resins, and many other applications. Other MMA derivatives include n-BMA, i-BMA, GMAA, 2-EHMA, 2-HEMA, HPMA and MAAmide and related methacrylamide and acetyl modified methacrylamides.
