The Asian olefins market has been in a build cycle since 2020. A wave of new crackers and PDH facilities poised to start up will significantly increase Asian capacity. Additionally, US feedstock cost advantages support continued ethylene and derivative exports to Asia, enhancing competition. High feedstock costs triggered voluntary production cuts over the past two years. Despite consumption recovering in mainland China, demand growth struggles to catch up with new capacity, leaving the Asian market with overcapacity that is expected to persist for several years. In the meanwhile, Asia continues to grow dependence on on-purpose technologies for olefin production although self-sufficiency has been improved significantly.
