Methyl Tert-Butyl Ether (MTBE)

Methyl Tert-Butyl Ether (MTBE) is produced from reacting methanol and isobutylene. MTBE is primarily used as a blend component in the gasoline pool, whereas other applications are rather small and mainly based on the production of the intermediate high purity isobutylene (HPIB). MTBE use in the US gasoline pool was phased out in the early 2000’s driven by ground water environmental concerns.
