Gas oil is a term used to describe a heavier fraction of distilled crude oil that is typically processed in either a fluid catalytic cracking unit or a hydrocracker to produce lighter oil fractions that can be utilized in gasoline, diesel, and chemicals. Gas Oil is generally lighter than diesel and heavier than asphalt.
