Nylon refers to a broad family of organic polymers known as polyamides, defined by the presence of an amide functional group (NH–CO). First commercialized in the 1930s as the world’s first successful synthetic thermoplastic polymer, nylon is renowned for its excellent wear resistance, thermal stability, and chemical durability. Nylon 6 Production Pathway

Nylon 6 is produced from caprolactam, a seven-membered ring structure synthesized primarily from cyclohexanone. Cyclohexanone is derived from benzene through several routes, including:

  • Phenol hydrogenation

  • Cyclohexane oxidation

  • Cyclohexene hydration

Cyclohexanone reacts with hydroxylamine (from ammonia) to form cyclohexanone oxime, which undergoes a molecular rearrangement (Beckmann rearrangement) to produce caprolactam, the monomer for nylon 6.

Nylon 6,6 Production Pathway

Nylon 6,6 is synthesized from two six-carbon monomers:

  • Adipic acid

  • Hexamethylenediamine (HMDA)

Adipic acid is produced from a mixture of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone (KA oil), which itself can be obtained from cyclohexane, cyclohexene, or phenol. HMDA’s primary feedstock, adiponitrile, is produced via two main commercial processes:

  • Butadiene route—butadiene reacts with hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen to produce adiponitrile.

  • Acrylonitrile route—acrylonitrile is electrochemically dimerized to form adiponitrile.
