Diisocyanates and polyisocyanates are highly reactive intermediates that primarily react with polyol hydroxyl groups to produce polyurethanes. The most widely used diisocyanates are aromatic in nature. Polymethylenepolyphenylene isocyanate (polymeric MDI or PMDI) and methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) are derived from aniline (which itself originates from benzene). Most commercial isocyanate production relies on the phosgenation of primary amines, a technologically complex and largely proprietary process. Consequently, the global MDI market is highly concentrated with significant barriers to entry. The top five producers collectively account for more than 80% of the global nameplate capacity. This supply concentration contrasts with a broad base of importing countries, with major net importers including Canada, Brazil, Poland, Russia, Turkey, India, Thailand, and Vietnam.
