Market Overview

Duration: Long-term outlook to 2050

Formaldehyde is used heavily in the infrastructure and construction sectors. Formaldehyde is normally a price taker of methanol, as the formaldehyde price trend follows its major feedstock trend. Therefore, even in a very high methanol price environment, the formaldehyde industry can still manage to achieve positive margins. Construction and remodeling activity, vehicle and furniture production, and original equipment manufacturing account for most of the world’s consumption of formaldehyde. General economic conditions greatly influence the demand for these markets. As a result, demand for formaldehyde largely follows the patterns of leading world economies. Formaldehyde resins are predominantly used in the wood products industry as adhesives. Growth of these resins strongly correlates to construction/remodeling activity—which accounts for over 50% of consumption—and, to a lesser degree, the automotive industry.

Formaldehyde market is fragmented, with about 500 producers worldwide. Most formaldehyde producers are primarily concerned with satisfying captive requirements for derivatives and/or supplying local merchant sales. Formaldehyde can polymerize after a week of storage. It is usually produced close to the point of consumption because of the difficulties associated with transporting it and the cost of transporting it in solution. As a result, world trade in formaldehyde is minimal and typically accounts for less than 1% of production. Downstream integration into derivatives is very important.
