Market Overview

Duration: Long-term outlook to 2050

Global Acetic acid demand is dominated by Vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) and Terephthalic acid (PTA). Other large consumption segments include Acetic Anhydride and Ethyl Acetate (EAC). Minor consumption segments include Monochloro Acetic Acid (MCA), n-Butyl Acetate (BAC), Sec-Butyl Acetate and Ethanol. Apart from its various industrial applications in manufacturing important derivatives, Acetic acid is also known for its use in the food industry, especially in vinegar and pharmaceutical industries. Vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) demand is primarily dominated by Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVOH) and Polyvinyl Acetate (PVA) which are used in adhesives, paints and coatings. VAM is also a precursor for Ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), whose growth is boosted by strong demand in photovoltaic panels. Other minor consumption segments include Ethylene–vinyl alcohol (EVOH) and Vinyl Acetate Ethylene (VAE).

Acetic acid is mostly produced from methanol through the process of methanol carbonylation owing to its lower production cost compared with other technologies. Natural gas prices are the driving factor for acetic acid production costs as they directly impact the methanol production costs and margins. In mainland China, coal prices influence the methanol and acetic acid production costs as China primarily uses coal to produce methanol. Vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) is primarily produced through the ethylene process which uses ethylene, acetic acid and oxygen as raw materials. In mainland China, VAM is mainly produced from the acetylene process due to the low cost of acetylene production. The sustainability agenda is also driving interest in bioacetic acid, which could be produced either wholly or partially from biomethanol via the mass balance method.
