Methanol is the simplest alcohol with one carbon atom. Most production occurs via the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide, which is produced from natural gas. Key derivatives produced from methanol include formaldehyde, acetic acid, MTBE, ETBE, methyl methacrylate, light olefins, biodiesel, and methyl acrylate.
