Alkylate is a high octane gasoline blendstock produced in petroleum refineries. Alkylate is produced by the acid catalyzed reaction between isobutane and low molecular weight alkenes, namely butene’s and propylene. Units are most often associated with refinery fluid catalytic cracking units (FCCU) because of their substantial production of butenes and propylene. Sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid alkylation units are the primary technologies utilized. Solid based acid catalyst technologies have been developed and commercialized in recent years.
