Market Overview

Long-term outlook to 2060

Diisocyanates and polyisocyanates are highly reactive chemical intermediates that primarily react with the hydroxyl groups of polyol coreactants to produce polyurethanes. Toluene diisocyanate (TDI), derived from toluene, is one of the most widely used aromatic diisocyanates and is essential for manufacturing flexible polyurethane foams used across furniture, bedding, and automotive seating applications. TDI demand is also expanding rapidly in the electric vehicle (EV) sector, where lightweight yet high-strength materials are increasingly critical. As EV technology advances, TDI consumption per vehicle is expected to rise, supporting automakers’ goals to reduce weight and increase energy efficiency. In addition, sustainability initiatives are driving new growth in low-carbon and renewable polyurethane systems, including TDI-based flexible foams produced with recycled or bio-based polyether polyols.

The global TDI industry is highly concentrated due to significant technological and capital barriers. The three leading producers account for roughly 60% of global nameplate capacity. While proprietary technology has historically been a constraint, this barrier is diminishing as more producers, particularly in mainland China, develop and implement their own TDI production technologies. Today, more than 90% of global TDI capacity is located in Northeast Asia, Western Europe, and the United States. Future world-scale investments are expected to remain concentrated in the Asia Pacific region, particularly in China, although selective expansions, such as debottlenecking existing U.S. facilities, may occur where cost advantages are present. Over the next decade, emerging markets, including India, the Middle East, and Central Europe, may also pursue new TDI capacity additions.

Despite production being concentrated in a limited number of regions, TDI consumption is global, resulting in a large number of importing countries. The most significant net importers include Brazil, Poland, Russia, Turkey, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam, all of which rely on international trade flows to meet domestic polyurethane demand.
