Ethyl chloride, also known as chloroethane, is produced by the hydrochlorination of ethylene. A large demand segment that is now obsolete was the production of tetraethyllead. Like other chlorinated hydrocarbons, ethyl chloride has been used in a variety of applications such as refrigerant, aerosol propellent, and blowing agents that are now also obsolete due to emissions.
