Market Overview
Duration: Short-term – 2-year price forecast and market outlook
The North American polyethylene (PE) market is facing unprecedented domestic competition from new suppliers and added capacity at a time when the global industry continues to struggle with significant oversupply relative to demand. Despite these challenges, North America is expected to maintain a structural advantage due to its competitively priced ethane feedstock, in contrast to many international PE producers reliant on oil-based naphtha.
Additional capacity is set to reshape the regional landscape, with the Golden Triangle project, a joint venture between Chevron Phillips Chemical and QatarEnergy, scheduled to bring a 2-million-metric-ton high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plant online in the second half of 2026. As supply grows, exports will become increasingly important to balancing the North American market, elevating the significance of tariffs, trade policies, and antidumping duties for regional producers.
While integrated margins are expected to remain under pressure compared with previous years, North America’s ethane-to-naphtha cost advantage is projected to support some of the highest polyethylene margins globally throughout the forecast period.
Comprehensive monthly market price, supply, demand, and trade data and analysis for:
- High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
- Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE)
- Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE)
