WE Soda is the world’s largest producer of soda ash and a leading manufacturer of sodium bicarbonate, essential ingredients in glassmaking, detergents, chemicals, food and sustainable products such as Solar PV and EV batteries.

Headquartered in London, the company was founded in 2009 with operations in Türkiye, where it pioneered innovative solution-extraction mining from trona deposits near Ankara. Solution extraction significantly reduces environmental impact by minimising surface disturbance, lowering energy use by up to 40%, decreasing water consumption by 20-30% and producing less waste compared to traditional ‘synthetic’ methods. In a landmark transaction which completed in February 2025, WE Soda acquired Alkali from Genesis Energy, the largest US-based natural soda ash producer, in an all-cash deal valued at $1.4 billion. This transformative acquisition integrates two Wyoming facilities – Westvaco and Granger into our “West” business, adding 4.3 million metric tonnes of capacity. The acquisition was a strategic milestone for growth, efficiency, and sustainability leadership, enhancing geographic diversification (now 55% Türkiye, 45% US), strengthening supply chain resilience via ANSAC’s export network, and positioning WE Soda as the largest producer of soda ash in the world.
