Global Plastics Summit Day 2
Session 5: Market Dynamics & Supply Chain
The chemical commodities sector, long known for its supply chain efficiency, faces significant disruptions. Recent geopolitical conflicts have increased costs and extended shipping times, creating lasting challenges. Global freight rates, under scrutiny since the COVID-19 pandemic, have shown unexpected volatility—dropping post-pandemic but rebounding in 2024 due to renewed tensions. As container freight plays a critical role in setting chemical prices through the movement of polymers and goods, this talk will examine recent market events and explore potential future impacts on global freight and which issues could impact supply chain availability and costs.
The industry is experiencing a shift in production and exports driven by investment. Historic exports will exceed 50% of production as tens of billions of dollars of investment leverages cheap ethane gas to meet emerging market demand growth. How will this impact both local and global demand?
Session 6: Progress to a Circular Economy
Speakers:
Greg Mulholland, CEO, Citrine
Zack Patterson, Americas Market Development Manager – Polypropylene, Vistamaxx and Exact, ExxonMobil Product Solutions Company
Brian Kimberley, Vice President, Marketing and Licensing & Services
We continue to see advancements in collecting, processing, and recycling plastic waste. Expectations are exponentially raised with the potential to apply artificial intelligence. This panel will provide deep insight into the development and application of new capabilities to increase the volume and quality of recyclate. It will also discuss their experience applying new technologies to accelerate the transformation of the plastic to a circular industry.
Speakers:
Jeremy Wallach, Partner, McKinsey & Co.
Kate Bailey, Chief Policy Officer, Association of Plastics Recyclers
Adam Peer, Lead, Plastics Sustainability Team, American Chemistry Council (ACC)
Advancing technologies requires careful consideration of key factors that not only enhance the value of technical innovations but also address their broader impact on human experience. This involves aligning human resources to effectively integrate and leverage AI contributions, ensuring an equitable transition during technological shifts, maximizing the potential of new business models, and prioritizing design for circularity from the outset. These levers require an effective body of regulatory support that drives an equitable transformation of the plastics ecosystem.
