Conquering Market Turbulence

Tuesday, 18 April 2023 | 9:30 AM –  2 PM | 2F Sakura room, Courtyard by Marriott Tokyo Ginza Hotel

Petrochemical markets have been buffeted for several years by extremely strong forces including COVID-related trends, logistics constraints, energy price volatility, and geopolitical upheaval.  2023 begins with pessimistic expectations for key global economies, continued energy and political uncertainty, and overcapacity in many significant chemical markets.  At the same time, the industry has been challenged to become more sustainable.  Overcoming adverse market conditions, and addressing decarbonization and plastics circularity while continuing to deliver shareholder value are the industry’s defining challenges.

Chemical Market Analytics will be holding a Petrochemical Market Briefing in Tokyo. Join our industry experts, as they provide an in-depth overview and describe the overarching outlook and specific trends.

Opportunities and Challenges in Attaining Plastics Circularity

Utpal Sheth, Executive Director, APAC Polyolefins

The world has been tuned to a linear world where plastics are used in all walks of life and then disposed of. This has resulted in severe damage to the environment, which cannot be sustained any longer. In order to reverse the process we need to change our habits, enact new rules, develop systems and invent new technologies. The presentation will look at the opportunities and challenges involved in attaining Plastics Circularity in the long term.

Global Olefins – In a World of Oversupply

William Chen, Executive Director, Asia Olefins

Global olefins market has been in a build cycle since 2020. A wave of new crackers and PDH facilities in Asia poised to start up will significantly increase olefin capacity further. Despite consumption recovering, demand growth struggles to catch up with new capacity, leaving olefins market with overcapacity that is expected to persist for several years. Meanwhile, high feedstock costs triggered voluntary production cuts over the past two years. Going forward, with the reopening in mainland China, can fast demand recovery be expected? How long will oversupply persist?

We are living in a very challenging geo-political and economic environment. Moreover, there has been a massive capacity buildup in PE and PP during recent years which has significantly lengthened supplies. In such a competitive environment, the relatively high-cost producers in Asia and Europe are facing immense challenges. This presentation will provide an outlook for the Global Polyolefins Business for the short to medium term in the midst of such a challenging environment.
