Session 5: Packaging Trends & Innovation

Nick Vafiadis, Vice President Plastics, Chemical Market Analytics
Vineet Kapila, Global Strategic Marketing Leader, e-Mobility, Ascend Performance Materials

McKinsey, speaker to be determined

Plastics face challenges across multiple industries to remain a material of choice in many applications, even though they play a critical part in today’s standard of living. The industry must adapt to meet current and future market needs, driving a reduction in plastic waste to landfills and the environment. The panel will focus on examples in various spaces like E-commerce and food packaging where plastics face existential threats versus other materials like paper while also exploring the focus on key innovative trends in the space to address key issues around reducing plastic waste. Hear perspectives from resin producers, major processing converters, as well as end users on how plastics will evolve to protect their current market share and future growth potential.

Moderator: Joel Morales, Executive Director, Polyolefins Americas, Chemical Market Analytics

Joe Tocci, SVP, Global Sourcing & Supply Chain, Intertape Polymer Corp.
LyondellBasell, Speaker to be announced

Connect and engage with industry colleagues. Sessions will resume at 10:55 AM.

Session 6: Progress to a Circular Economy

The Plastics Industry is now engaged in an unprecedented transformation with accompanying disruptions that escalate investment risk. A wide range of recycling technology options are available but lack demonstrated performance at commercial scale. Mechanical recycling is poised to expand, incorporating new AI supported process to manage mixed plastics waste and expand the scope to include more difficult formats and flexibles. However, the existing mechanical recycling infrastructure is fragmented and in need of investments and capacity scaling. The chemical recycling landscape is populated with a preponderance of independent technology providers outside the incumbent, integrated chemical supply chain. New business models are emerging and the lines that historically separated waste management, recycling and chemical companies are blurring quickly. This panel is planned to provide insight into the emerging technologies and investments that will set the pace for a circular plastics ecosystem.

Moderator: Anthony Palmer, Vice President, Global Circular Plastics Sustainability

Purecycle, speaker to be announced

The transition to a circular ecosystem for plastics involves activating ‘disruptive levers’, actions well beyond the underlying investments in recycling processes. Transformative action is needed to first manage the volumes of plastics waste generated by extending materials use phase, returning to consumables that are designed for repair and reuse that also can be recycled to valued products. The plastics transformation progresses within boundaries of greenhouse gas reduction and the energy transition away from fossil fuels for mobility and power generation. Advancing circular solutions will also require unprecedented alignment of effective policies to affect fiduciary management of plastics on a global scale. This panel is planned to provide a picture of an industry transforming itself, building upon a history of innovative that has proved essential to supporting human life.

Moderator: Robin Waters, Executive Director, Circular Plastics & Sustainability, Chemical Market Analytics by OPIS

Allen Langdon, CEO, Circular Materials
Greg DeKunder, Vice President, Circular Solutions, Nova Chemical
Assocation of Plastic Recyclers, speaker to be announced
