The European chlor-vinyls industry is at a crossroads, facing crippling energy costs, high carbon emissions fees, and depressed demand. In this panel, producers will discuss the industry’s key challenges and opportunities, while exploring a critical question: what is the future role of the European chlor-alkali sector in global markets?

Damián Gumpel, Strategic Advisor and Global Chemical Industry Executive, DG Insights LLC
North America’s chlor-alkali industry faces a pivotal moment as producers balance capacity rationalization against selective downstream integration while navigating divergent demand trajectories across key end-use markets. Success may well require unprecedented producer-customer collaboration to optimize capital allocation, manage the chlorine-caustic balance, and capture growth in high-value derivative chains while addressing structural challenges in mature segments.
Stefan Karrenbrock, Senior Director Business Development and Sales CA, thyssenkrupp nucera AG & Co. KGaA
With rising electricity price volatility and increasing demand for flexible production, chlor-alkali plants are under growing pressure to adapt their operations. Flexibility has become essential to remain competitive and to control operating costs.

Session 6: Chlor-vinyls Summary: What’s Next?

Nick Kovics, Vice President, Global Chemical Research Lead & Inorganic Chemicals Team Lead, Chemical Market Analytics by OPIS

Eddie Kok, Executive Director, Global Vinyls, Chemical Market Analytics by OPIS
Over the past three years, the global PVC market has grappled with a severe supply-demand disconnect, fueled by rapid capacity expansion and stalling growth. While declining margins have created a challenging climb for many, will the tide turn as market rationalization takes hold? This presentation will examine the PVC market rebalancing and its long-term impact on global trade flows and margins.
Brian Newsome, Vice President, Global Chlor-alkali, Chemical Market Analytics by OPIS
The global chlor-alkali industry is approaching a critical juncture as chlorine and caustic soda markets continue to decouple. Macroeconomic headwinds are dampening chlorine-intensive sectors like construction and automotive, while caustic soda remains resilient, bolstered by consumer spending and aluminum demand. This divergence is compounded by shifting regional competitiveness; North America and the Middle East maintain a structural advantage through low energy costs, whereas high prices in Europe are forcing producers to consider capacity rationalization and restructuring. Finally, imminent expansions in India, China, and the Middle East threaten to further saturate an already oversupplied global market.
